Download 12 CSV files for last 12 months of England-wide prescribing data (~1.3Gb each!)
Filter the data by the two CCGs (bodies that commissions healthcare) covering Cumbria - North Cumbria CCG and Morecambe Bay CCG. Extra filtering is still needed as Morecambe Bay straddles into the next county, Lancashire. This is also where we add the name and address of each GP practice using a left_join.
Download 12 CSV files of accompanying data listing registered patients at practices and join this to our filtered prescriptions data frame. This allows for ‘per person’ calculations.
Download a CSV file of all Cumbrian postcodes (similar to zipcodes) from the Office of National Statistics Geoportal and join this to our prescriptions data frame to drop the final few non-Cumbrian practices.
Some practices have closed over the past twelve months so are reporting as na values in population. The majority of this population will have ‘moved’ to another practice.
Some figures in the ITEMS column would import as na unless the column was specifically declared as col_double.
Antibiotics and Opioids
Antibiotics and opioids are two prescription drugs currently under the spotlight.
